his past weekend marked a historic milestone for the City of Yonkers and for girls’ sports in our community—the official launch of Yonkers’ first-ever Girls Flag Football League. What unfolded was far more than just a series of games; it was a celebration of empowerment, opportunity, and the belief that our female athletes deserve equal access to organized sports.

The day began with an opening ceremony that set the tone for the season ahead. Community leaders, families, and supporters came together to witness history being made as the league kicked off its inaugural season. The atmosphere was electric—cheers echoed across the field, parents proudly supported their daughters, and the young athletes took the field with confidence and excitement, ready to make their mark.

Recognition and Support from City Leaders

A highlight of the day was the presentation of official proclamations recognizing the significance of this moment. Mayor Mike Spano attended and presented a proclamation to Coach Nuryel Benitez for his leadershPhoto: Elvin Almonteip and commitment to advancing opportunities for female athletes in Yonkers. His presence was deeply meaningful to the athletes and their families, as it showed that the city’s leadership is not only aware of this movement but is actively standing behind it.

We also recognize the invaluable contributions of Millie Gutierrez, CEO of Youth & Senior Empowerment, for her tireless dedication to our cause and unwavering advocacy for our youth. Her work behind the scenes and in the community has been instrumental in turning this vision into a reality.

The launch ceremony was energized by Legislator David Tubiolo, who served as MC and kept the crowd engaged and excited throughout the day. His presence added both professionalism and enthusiasm to an already special event.

We were also proud to welcome Legislator Shanae Williams and Councilwoman Deana Norman, who came out to show their support for our young athletes and the broader mission of equity in youth sports. Their attendance highlighted the importance of this league not only for our athletes but for the future of the Yonkers community as a whole.

Special acknowledgment goes to Vice-Chair Jose Alvarado, one of our strongest supporters since day one. His consistent encouragement and belief in our mission have helped us move forward with confidence and determination.

Special thanks also go to Warren Rosenberg of MetroSports Magazine, who came out to capture stunning images of the athletes, ensuring that the memories of this inaugural day will be preserved and celebrated. Local photographer Elvin Almonte volunteered his time and talent to take team photos, offering families priceless keepsakes of their daughters’ first games in the league.

Behind the scenes, the leadership team of Alpha Elite Sports, Inc. worked tirelessly to make this day a success. President Kristian Areche (founder of the Girls NFL Flag Football League initiative ), Vice President George Goris, and League Manager Nelson Frias were instrumental in turning a vision into reality. Their commitment to empowering youth through athletics—especially girls who historically have had fewer opportunities in sports—was evident in every detail of the event.

A New Chapter for Yonkers

The games themselves were exciting and competitive, showcasing not just the talent of these young athletes but also their enthusiasm to learn and grow. For many of these girls, this was their first opportunity to play in an organized flag football league, and the pride they carried onto the field was palpable.

The success of the launch makes it clear: this league is more than just about football. It’s about building confidence, teaching teamwork, and ensuring that young women in Yonkers have the same opportunities to dream big as their male counterparts.

As we look ahead to the rest of the season and future expansions, one thing is certain—the Yonkers Girls Flag Football League is here to stay. Its launch has already inspired countless families, supporters, and leaders to rally behind the cause of equity in youth sports.

This was just the beginning, but it was a powerful one. History was made in Yonkers, and we cannot wait to see how far these athletes will go—on the field and in life.
