Yonkers Girls Flag Football League Kicks Off with Record-Breaking Registration and Community Support

The City of Yonkers is buzzing with excitement as the inaugural season of the Yonkers Girls Flag Football League prepares to launch. What started as a vision to create more opportunities for female athletes in our community has quickly grown into something beyond what anyone could have imagined. The response has been nothing short of inspiring, and it is clear that Yonkers is ready to embrace this historic moment.

When planning began earlier this year, the expectation was to field six teams for the first-ever girls flag football league in the city. That in itself was considered an ambitious goal for a brand-new program. However, after registration opened, the enthusiasm from local families, athletes, and community members completely surpassed all expectations. Instead of six teams, we are proud to announce that eight teams will take the field this fall, with more than 70 girls officially registered to play.

This overwhelming turnout is a clear sign of the hunger and passion young female athletes in Yonkers have for opportunities to compete, grow, and shine in sports. For far too long, girls’ athletics—especially in football—have not received the attention or investment they deserve. This league marks an important step forward, not just for Yonkers, but for the broader movement toward equity in youth sports.

The official inauguration of the league will take place on Sunday, September 28th at Lennon Park, and the day promises to be a true celebration. Families, friends, and community supporters are invited to bring a chair, cheer on the athletes, and be part of this historic occasion. Sunday morning flag football in Yonkers will never be the same, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to see our athletes take the field for the very first time.

What has made this launch even more special is the level of support from the Yonkers community. From parents who stepped up to volunteer, to coaches willing to dedicate their time, to local organizations who recognize the importance of investing in youth sports—the collective effort has been nothing short of extraordinary. This isn’t just about football. It’s about unity, growth, and creating a new tradition in our city.

As an organization, we are truly speechless. To see so many young girls put on a jersey, strap on their flags, and walk onto the field ready to play is a dream come true. We envisioned building a foundation, but with the momentum generated already, it feels like we are building a legacy.

The Yonkers Girls Flag Football League is more than a sports program—it’s a platform for empowerment. It’s where teamwork, resilience, and leadership are built, and where young women will form friendships and memories that last a lifetime. Every player who signed up this year is not just joining a team; she is becoming a pioneer for the future of girls’ athletics in Yonkers.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to every parent, coach, volunteer, and supporter who has helped make this possible. Your belief in our mission and your encouragement for these athletes has turned an idea into a reality. Together, we are setting a powerful example for what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision.

As we count down the days to September 28th, one thing is clear: the inaugural season of the Yonkers Girls Flag Football League is not just about sports. It’s about opportunity. It’s about representation. And most importantly, it’s about celebrating the next generation of athletes who are ready to leave their mark on Yonkers history.
